Why your blog ain’t making money online, Part 2

not making money online, why not?

In this post, I provide a checklist explaining why your blog is not making money. As you learned in part 1 of this post (titled Why your blog ain’t making money online!), there are many variables that you could blame for your blog not making bringing the monthly income you hoped for. Some of these variables are a little easier to tap into and cross off the checklist. Let’s take a look at these variables in further detail.

Is your blog new?
Is your site/blog indexed?
How competitive is niche?
Are you promoting your blog?
Are you writing for your readers or for the money?

If your blog is new, keep in mind that it takes time for the search engines to index your site. Indexing is how the search engines Google, Bing, etc. gather information and data about the content of your site. This information is used to list your site in the search engines. This is also based on the keywords that are associated with your site and your site will appear based on how it is ranked by the search engines for those keywords.

Fortunately, there is a way to check to see if Google has indexed your site. To check this, follow the steps below:

  1. simply type: site:(YourSiteName)
  2. your website address for example site:drlwow.com (see image below)

If you are not making money online, your site may not be indexed.

Once you have that information, it will help you determine next steps. If your site is not indexed, use google search console to allow Google to index your site. You can also download and install plugins in WordPress to create sitemaps that help search engines with navigating your site and indexing it.

Get to know the competition in your niche

Your niche or genre that you are blogging in may have thousands of bloggers writing similar content. Also in your niche, there are experts who may have been blogging for a lot longer than you have (years). So, they may have a few tips and strategies that position them well ahead of you in the search engine results.

In addition, with so many bloggers in a niche, so many styles of writing are available for readers. Some readers look for the style that speaks to them and it may or may not be yours.

How are you promoting your blog?

Not making money online, let’s change that!

Are you promoting your blog online? If not, you should consider doing so since that is where a lot of your traffic will come from. If people don’t know you exist, how can they visit your blog? You can’t just write some blog posts a few times a week and wait for “it to happen.” Be active and be in control of your traffic to an extent.

Schedule your week where you spend time posting and organizing your blog, while you also carve out some time to promote your blog. This will significantly impact the traffic coming to your posts and the amounts of comments and shares.

If you don’t promote, then you are increasing the likelihood of not be making money online from your blog! As you write and promote posts, think about how everybody has a story to tell and people are always looking to read these stories. Let this drive you to promote your blog and get noticed!

Who are you blogging for?

When I read a lot of posts from experienced bloggers about making money online, I immediately know their audience. Once they start sharing their stories, their struggles, their triumphs, their failures/mistakes (including how at one point they were not making money online with their current blog), etc. I know I am reading a blog that was written for content readers!!! Ask yourself that question as you write, am I telling a story that is written for my readers or am I communicating that I just want to make money and I could care less about helping others do the same?

As you know good things come to those who… It’s not wait, but my belief is Good things come to those who do good things for others. My only caveat is, you don’t do good things, expecting something in return… the universe takes care of you! In the words of Dr. Richard Carlson,

“Do Something Nice for Someone Else and Don’t Tell Anyone About It.” Take that approach as you blog, write good content…Okay well promote it, and tell people about it but don’t expect something good to happen just because you shared a good post. Just practice the habit of doing good things.

In closing, know your audience and continue to write for them. Develop loyal followers and readers who will continue to come back but equally important they will comment and share your posts. The final thing to consider is whether or not you know and understand the ways to make money online. In addition, they will contribute to the discussion around some of your content.

Huge online earning potential

Why having a blog has huge online earning potential

Paired with the right WordPress hosting plan, a blog has huge online earning potential because it is always online and accessible to readers. This regular online presence increases the likelihood of more traffic to your site!

For those of you who don’t know what traffic is, traffic is the visitors that come to your site. A site with a lot of traffic has a lot of visitors. More visitors in most cases equals a higher online earning potential to earn more money.

Huge online earning potential

Having a blog has huge online earning potential!

Blogs provide information people want

In most cases the information on blogs is one of 2 things, either timely or timeless. When I read blogs, I find what I’m looking for and often times when I look at the date it was published, more often than not, it was published anywhere from 3-5 years ago. This is an example of how some content can be timeless. A blog written about the Covid-19 pandemic would be considered timely because this is a current event in our society.

Motivation to tap into huge online earning potential

Blogs provide motivation for others. A blog written in the right way, speaks to its readers and inspires them to achieve something. Some authors add humor to their blog and make their readers laugh.

Some blogs provide real stories that readers can relate to and this is motivational. These posts create an “if I can do it, so can you” kind of a feel or effect. Sometimes that is the push or swift kick that people need. Often times people purchase information from self-help books. But I advise all readers to save their money, and visit a few blogs on the topic first.

Some books come from blogs

As an editor and ghostwriter, I work with many authors who take their content from their blogs and publish it in books. In some cases the authors who do this, are authors of self-help books. So my inside scoop is go to the blog first.

What I often encourage the authors I work with to do, is make sure their book is more detailed and it elaborates on their blog posts. So this way they give their reader something more and something different.

The reason that motivating others is related to your own online earning potential is simple. What we put out as people, is what we attract. Like attracts like – the law of attraction. We have to motivate others to continue doing well ourselves.

Maximize your online earning

Some people mistake and think they can’t earn money online because they don’t have a computer or their computer is too slow or too old (as I write this on a MacBook from 2013). That is not the case. With the emergence of Smartphones and Apps, the possibilities are now endless. With the WordPress App below, you can update your blog, reply to comments, check stats, and more right from your phone from the convenience of your current location.

Speaking of apps, the other night I literally made $10 in 3 minutes from my bed! It was quick, effortless, and enjoyable. I used the Fiverr App to create an invoice and accept payment within 2 minutes. The other  minute, I spent completing the task. Read on below!

Find easy freelance jobs

As a freelancer, I can literally do copy and paste jobs. For example, a prospective client may message or email me the text they need proofread and it can range from 1 sentence to several paragraphs. From there, I send an invoice. Once the buyer accepts, I can copy and paste my revised version or put the text in Google Docs and send them the Google Docs version.

With this system, I don’t have to get up to turn on a computer and I can even do jobs like this while waiting in line in a retail store (I have done that many times). I share this with you so you can see the possibility to have a huge online earning potential when I combine my blog with my freelance services.

Blogs can be updated

As a blogger myself, I often explore other blogs in the make money from home genre. What I often find is blogs published in let’s say 2018 with viral posts, will have several updates to those posts. One common update in this genre is when people share their earnings reports.

I recently read a very humbling blog post from Ling at insavvypanda.com. Ling wrote a few posts where she documented her monthly earnings along her journey to accumulating a few thousand monthly in blogging revenue. All great post by the way! But what was humbling for me was the fact that one of her updates to one of her posts was how she would no longer be posting her monthly earning reports.

In addition, to Ling at insavvypanda.com, I want to mention another very successful blogger I recently came across Virginia Nakitari at Earn Smart Online Class.com. Last year, she wrote a post discussing her earnings as a blogger. One of the highlights I want to mention, is that she posted her earnings as motivation to other bloggers out there. The point I want to make as I reference these 2 very successful bloggers is exactly what I stated above:

“These posts create an “if I can do it, so can you” kind of a feel or effect.”

As you can see, as a blogger and a writer, I am also an avid reader. I read lots of blogs about information I am interested and equally important information that I write about. So although I have my methods for improving and maintaining a huge online earning potential, I continue to acquire additional knowledge used by many of the experts before me.

One piece of advice I learned came from Michelle at MakingSenseofCents.com. In her post titled “5 Ways I Made My Blog Go Viral – 2,000,000 Views A Month in One Year!”, she hit on some pillars for being a successful blogger and having a huge online earning potential! Talk about an inspirational post…

You can always learn new ideas

In addition, Michelle discussed her and husband’s journey of launching their blog which included preparing pre-launch posts or getting blog posts ready before the site went live. This was big for me because again, I am also a ghostwriter.

prepare Blog posts pre-launch

Bloggers prepare lots of blog posts pre-launch

As a ghostwriter I write a lot of content. I recently realized some of that content goes towards the pre-launch posts that Michelle was writing about. Bingo! Content, content, content, before you even have a web hosting account.

Make blogging mutually beneficial

I love blogging because it offers me an escape that benefits me and my readers. I can write to and interact with my audience compared to being a ghostwriter where I just write for an audience that I will never engage with, while at the same time supporting the person claiming the text in their pursuit to tapping into the huge online earning potential from the posts.

If I could leave my readers and potential bloggers with 1 piece of importance advice, it would be, to write and write often. Notice, this doesn’t mean publish everything you write. I have come to the realization that sometimes I need to delete drafts I have written, and I am ok with that. Thank you again for tuning in. In closing, a blog is like an investment. What you put in it will greatly impact what you get out of it. Just like any other reasonable investment, there is huge online earning potential in a blog!
